MLB: No broken nose, no foul

In the wake of the altercation between Yankees OF Gary Sheffield and a Red Sox fan, apparently no punishment will be recommended against either participant.

The New York Daily News reported Sunday that Sheffield will meet with MLB officials to discuss the event, in which a fan brushed Sheffield’s face, apparently accidentally, with his glove as the player bumped against the wall to field a ball. Sheffield reacted by angrily striking the fan, then shouted at the man as security and teammates rushed in. Yankees officials say the meeting is not to determine punishment.

Boston Police said they have not considered charges against the fan, and did not even take the step of filing a report, the New York Times reported. Asked if he considered the case closed, a police spokesman replied, “it was never open.” That quote sounds even better in a Boston accent…
