Schmidt authors book; makes bold public statement

CLEARWATER, Fla. — Despite the cloud of suspicion that followed last year’s congressional hearing testimony, former Phillie slugger Mike Schmidt thinks Mark McGwire should be in the Hall of Fame. While working as a special instructor for the Phils, Schmidt made the statement as he began discussing his forthcoming book, Clearing the Bases: Juiced Players, Monster Salaries, Sham Records and a Hall of Famer’s Search for the Soul of Baseball.

Schmidt’s premise is a simple one: if Mac hasn’t been banned from the game, he’s clearly earned enshrinement on the field. “You have to judge him against his peers in the game,” Schmidt said. Schmidt didn’t shrink from controversy even prior to becoming an author, previously brokering the ill-fated deal to end Pete Rose’s banishment from the game.
