AAA team stocks up on postgame hot wings

PAWTUCKET, RI — The road back from knee surgery goes through Pawtucket, where David Wells will pitch Friday night for the Red Sox’ AAA affiliate. Although the start is a one-shot on the way to a scheduled April 12 callup to Boston, Rhode Island bars have been busy hiring extra bouncers in preparation.

Strangely, Sox manager Terry Francona doesn’t expect Wells to mow down minor-league batters. “”It wouldn’t shock me if you don’t see his best stuff,” Francona said. “The bigger the stage, the better the pitcher he is.” Arguably, Francona could have reversed “bigger” and “better,” and still be correct.
