Prospect sacrifices career so major-leaguers’ may live

NEW YORK, NY — A positive drug test meant a practically season-ending punishment for Devil Rays minor-league RHP Matt Rico, who was suspended for 100 games on Tuesday. The suspension is the second for Rico under rules imposed on Minor League Baseball by Major League Baseball in order to appear almost grotesquely tough on drugs while avoiding union lawsuits.

MLB did not state the drug that was found in Rico’s system, but the former outfielder will also likely face a stern lecture from Freddy Garcia.
