Holiday Trivia Quiz
Jason Michael Barker
Let's be honest -- the baseball world is moving a bit slowly these days. Most of the big-name free agents have already signed, the winter meetings passed without a true blockbuster trade, and with the holidays coming up, even those not-so-nice player agents are looking forward to a little down time.
With that in mind, what better to spice up your winter than a bit of the old baseball trivia, in the form of a quiz. Go ahead, try your hand at the questions -- the reader who answers the most questions correctly will win a shiny new Strikethree.com t-shirt, just too late for the holidays.
NOTE: The contest is over. You can view the results here.
1. Who is the only man ever to win Rookie of the Year, the Cy Young, and a MVP in his career?
2. Cy Young has started more games than any pitcher in history, by a large margin. Who's second on the list?
3. Who is the last pitcher to have 20 complete games in a season?
4. Name the brothers who finished 1-2 in a batting title race.
5. Who are the only two pitchers with 300 or more losses?
6. Of all the 300-game winners in history, who has the lowest career ERA?
7. Who holds the career record for most pinch hits, with 150?
8. Who holds the record for most games caught in a season, with 160? Hint: He has the same surname as a current MLB catcher.
9. Name all three men to have hit home runs in eight consecutive games.
10. Of the members of the 500 HR club, which led his league the most times (12), and the fewest (1)?
11. Who has the most career home runs of all players never to lead his league?
12. In 1971 the Baltimore Orioles were the last team to have four 20-game winners. Name all four pitchers.
13. Name the only pitcher in MLB history to have hit two home runs during a game in which he also pitched a no-hitter.
14. Which pitcher holds both the record for most career relief losses (108) and relief losses in a season (16)?
15. Name the only team (and the year they did it) to have three players with 40 or more home runs. For an extra point, name the three men.
There you have it. There are 16 points possible, and the reader who submits the most correct answers will win the shirt. In the event of a tie, the winner will be chosen randomly from the entries with the most correct answers. Limit one entry per person. I'll be accepting entries until 11:59 p.m. Pacific on Thursday, December 31, 1998, and the winner will be notified by e-mail. As always, Strikethree.com reserves the right to make all final decisions as we see fit.
